Day 16

July 2

I had BlueBelle parked in a bit of an awkward spot due to the storm last night. But I managed to extricate her and get her ready to roll. Today is pretty much just a 'grind it out' day of over 600 miles, most of which will be on the interstates.

I do get to go back through some of the Badlands so I get to see things I couldn't take pictures of in the storm last night.

The skies start to darken up again but I am hoping I don't encounter what I did coming in.

I take a good last look at the Badlands and then ...

I am back out on the open road again.
A good part of the day will be spent on I90 til I hang a right at Sioux Falls onto I29. It's a route that I have followed numerous times before.
Once again I have the pleasure of enjoying a beautiful sunrise painted by the Master Painter from the seat of a motorcycle.

I pass by a old west town used as a movie set that I have been by before. It has been turned into a tourist 'set' and they try to keep it up in good condition.

I see what appears to be a serious fire up ahead but I cannot figure what it is - even as I get closer and pass by it.

Since breakfast was nonexistent and it's about time for both of us to eat, I pull into a convenient stopping place.

They have some breakfast tacos so I figure I'll take what I can get and be glad that I had something to get.

I've been told that if I was coming this way, that I ought to stop by and see the Dignity Statue near Chamberlain, South Dakota.

I move a little closer for a better look and it is quite impressive and beautiful. The story is -

Dignity of Earth and Sky (shortened to Dignity for brevity) is a sculpture on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River near Chamberlain, South Dakota. The stainless steel statue depicts an Indigenous woman in Plains-style dress receiving a star quilt. It measures 50 feet high, 16 feet deep and 32 feet wide. The star quilt held by the woman has more than 100 blue diamond shapes that move in the wind "like an Aspen leaf".

But it's back to the road and unfortunately back to construction zones.

I see some more of those windmills and I have to wonder why they are not turning as the wind is blowing pretty hard right now.

Once again the sky looks less than inviting but I am holding out for that bright spot I see on the distant horizon.

The rain finally catches me but it's so hot I just welcome the cooling affect and ride on through it.

I have to laugh every time I pass this Sapp Brothers Water Tower where they have done a good job merging the practical with whimsical.

When I pass the Rulo, Nebraska exit I remember that there used to be a good Nebraska State line sign just off of it. But they 'improved' and replaced the old iron bridge and messed all of that up the last time I was through there.

I finally reach my abode for the evening in Platte City, Missouri.

The place where I usually go for supper is 'closed until further notice' which is a shame. So my other walkable 'opportunity' is Wendy's so fast food it is.

I get a burger, fries and a Frosty and it certainly fills the empty spot well enough.

I wander back to my room, knowing I have another 'grind it out' day for tomorrow. But at least at the end of it I should be back in my beloved Holler. With those thoughts cogitating in my head, it does not take me long to find the place of rest.
